Water softeners work by having calcium and magnesium ions trade places with sodium or potassium ions. When this happens, all the problems of hard water are eliminated. If you use sodium there will be some left over in the water but not very much, this is only a problem for people who are on sodium restricted diets. Most people who can’t consume lots of sodium just go with potassium; this will end up costing around three times as much though. In the end it would just be cheaper to buy a water filter or bottled water. Some people believe this is too much effort just to be able to drink water, but the only alternative besides potassium, water filters, and bottled water is to live with hard water. I would never recommend anyone to live with hard water but if you choose to that’s your choice.
My Thoughts on Magnetic Water Softeners
A lot of people come and ask me instead they can go with option like a magnetic water softener. My thoughts on magnetic water softeners are that if you really want to eliminate hard water it would be best to stay away. Some of the hardness in the water might go away initially but will take back form anywhere where water sets. That means that your pipes and plumbing fixtures will be safe but your water heater won’t be. Some people think this is a good alternative to a water softener and I have to admit that it sounds good on paper but I will stick with the traditional softener.
